Overview

Responsibilities

• Remove deteriorated or damaged mortar from joints in brick or stone walls.
• Mix and apply new mortar that matches the original in color and consistency.
• Use specialized tools (grinders, chisels, trowels) to create clean, even mortar lines.
• Finish joints to desired texture or style (concave, flush, beaded, etc.).
• Repair damaged bricks, blocks, or stonework.
• Replace spalled, cracked, or missing masonry units.
• Inspect masonry structures for signs of deterioration, cracking, or water damage.
• Identify areas needing repair or reinforcement.
• Report issues and suggest appropriate restoration or repair methods.
• Power wash or chemically clean brick/stone surfaces prior to tuckpointing.
• Set up scaffolding, ladders, and safety barriers.
• Follow OSHA safety standards and wear proper PPE.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.
• Measure, mix, and match mortar to existing work.
• Handle bricks, stone, and mortar safely and efficiently.
• Ensure proper curing of new mortar to prevent shrinkage or cracking.

Qualifications & Experience

• At least 5 years of experience in stone masonry and restoration, including tuckpointing.
• Ability to lift heavy materials, work at heights, and perform tasks in various weather conditions.​
• OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour Certification.
• Completion of vocational training or apprenticeship.
• Tuckpointing Skills: Removing and replacing mortar joints, particularly in historic masonry, is highly valued.
• Ability to interpret and follow blueprints or architectural drawings
