Outside Machinist

Overview

Responsibilities

stalling, repairing, and testing machinery such as turbines, generators, pumps, propellers, rudders, elevators, periscopes, and armaments 

Setting up and operating manufacturing machinery 

Ensuring that production equipment is functional 

Inspecting equipment and materials 

Communicating with co-workers, subordinates, and superiors 

Performing general maintenance on ships and submarines 

Climbing ladders and working at heights 

Working in small, tight, or confined spaces 

Kneeling, squatting, crawling, bending, stooping, and climbing on a daily basis 

Lifting heavy objects weighing 40 lbs. or more 

Working while repeatedly reaching overhead 

Working indoors or outdoors year-round in all weather conditions

Qualifications & Experience

• Blueprint reading: Machinists need to be able to read and interpret blueprints, and use drawings and technical reports to communicate with other manufacturing workers
• Analytical skills: Machinists need to have an analytical mind and be able to visualize projects and anticipate problems
• Manual dexterity: Machinists need to be precise and accurate, so manual dexterity is important
• Safety awareness: Machinists need to be safety conscious and observe all safety protocols for themselves and their team members
• Equipment maintenance: Machinists may need to be able to maintain hydraulic equipment and read hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams
• Computer skills: Machinists may need to be proficient with basic computer operations and able to load and run CNC programs
• Problem solving: Machinists need to be able to analyze situations and find the best solutions
