Protect your most important tool—your body

Back injuries are among the most common and costly injuries on the jobsite. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than one million workers experience back injuries each year. In fact, back injuries account for one in every 5 workplace injuries or illnesses and make up a significant portion of workers’ compensation claims annually.

These injuries often happen during routine tasks, especially when lifting heavy or awkward objects, using poor technique, twisting while carrying or repeating the same lifting motions throughout the day.

To help reduce the risk of injury, the PRST team has four essential tips every tradesperson should follow to protect their back on the job.

Eliminate Unnecessary Lifting

Use equipment like forklifts or dollies to minimize manual lifting and break down heavy loads into smaller, safer ones whenever possible

Set Up Trades-Friendly Workspace

Keep tools, materials, and supplies within easy reach to avoid constant bending or overreaching. Use lift-assist devices like conveyor belts and ensure proper shelving and storage to prevent risky movements.

Lift with a Buddy

Use the buddy system when lifting any awkward or heavy objects, set clear weight limits, and ensure only physically capable employees are assigned lifting tasks

Don’t Rely on Back Belts

While helpful in some instances, back supports often offer a false sense of safety. Prioritize warming up before your shift, stretching throughout the day, and always use proper lifting techniques.

In the trades, your body is one of your most important tools, and protecting it is essential for staying strong on the job. Taking a few extra moments to lift safely, use the right equipment, and work smarter can help prevent injuries that take you off the jobsite. Whether you’re just starting out or have years of experience, keeping safety front and center helps you keep doing the work you take pride in.
