One Slip Can Change Everything—Guardrails Matter

Guardrail systems are one of your best lines of defense against falls on construction sites, especially when working near edges or drops of 6 feet or more. When they’re installed properly, guardrails create a solid, physical barrier that can prevent serious injuries or fatalities around open edges, floor holes and scaffolds.

Safety starts with awareness and ends with action—respect guardrails, inspect them and never bypass them. Here are four essential tips from the PRST team to help make sure guardrails protect you and your crew every day.

Inspect Before You Work

Check guardrails for missing or damaged rails, loose connections and sharp edges before starting work. Report any issues immediately to prevent accidents. A quick inspection can prevent serious accidents.

Keep Barriers Strong and Secure

A standard guardrail system includes a top rail (42 inches +3 inches above the walking/working surface) and a midrail halfway between the top rail and the floor. It should withstand at least 200 pounds of force in any direction. Never rely on makeshift barriers or tape—only properly installed guardrails provide real protection.

Don’t Leave Openings Unprotected

If a guardrail must be removed for material handling or access, it should be reinstalled immediately once the task is complete. Never leave edges unprotected—falls can happen instantly, even in short tasks.

Spot Hazards and Speak Up

Know the limits and proper use of guardrails. Attend training sessions, ask questions if something isn’t clear and report missing or damaged components right away. Contributing to safety demonstrates your commitment to yourself and your crew.

Guardrails are a simple but powerful way to prevent falls and keep everyone on the jobsite safe. By inspecting systems, understanding installation standards, respecting temporary removal rules and staying educated, you help protect yourself and your team every day. Safety is everyone’s responsibility—don’t take shortcuts and stay alert around open edges.
