Watch your step: Staying alert to floor opening risks
Falls on construction sites cause more injuries than any other type of accident, accounting for roughly 40% of serious incidents in the building trades. Floor openings are one of the most common hazards and staying aware of them is a responsibility shared by everyone on the job site. Keeping openings covered, guarded and clearly marked helps protect you and your crew members every day.
To make sure every step is secure, the PRST team is sharing four essential floor opening safety tips.
Secure and Lock Down Floor Openings
When covering a floor opening, use a cover that is both large enough and strong enough to support the weight. Make sure it is secured so it cannot shift or be accidentally moved.
Mark Hazards Clearly
Clearly mark all covers with large, bright, fluorescent warning signs. Make sure every worker on site is aware of the hazard before work begins.
Protect All Exposed Sides
Never leave an opening exposed or unprotected. If covering it is not practical, install guardrails with toe boards around all exposed slides. Ladder way openings or platforms should also have railings and toe boards with entrances protected to prevent accidental entry.
Restrict Access & Block Off Dangerous Areas
For openings like removed steel grating floors—which can be hard to see—use ropes or barriers to restrict access and prevent anyone from walking into the hazard.
Proper protection of floor openings can prevent serious injuries—or worse. By securing covers, marking hazards clearly, guarding exposed areas and limiting access where needed, tradespeople can prevent falls and work safely. Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Stay alert, follow these tips and always watch out for yourself and your team.
