Know your ABCs: Understanding Fire Extinguisher Safety
Just like every job calls for the right tool, every fire demands the right extinguisher. Fire extinguishers are labeled by class, each one designed to handle specific types of fires—from electrical to flammable liquids, and beyond. Knowing these classifications is key to responding quickly and safely in an emergency.
To make sure you’re always ready for any fire emergency, the PRST team put together four must-know tips for choosing and handling the right extinguisher on the job.
Understand the classifications
Class A fires evolve from ordinary combustible materials like wood, paper, and cloth. Class B fires involve flammable liquids and gases. Class B fires are found in energized electrical equipment.
Select the appropriate extinguisher
Only use the fire extinguisher whose class corresponds to the class of the fire. Never use a Class A extinguisher, which contains water or foam, on a liquid or electrical fire.
Know where they’re stored
Know where extinguishers are located and how to use them. Follow the directions printed on the label.
Prepare your jobsite
The best extinguisher to have on a job is a multi-purpose Class ABC extinguisher, which contains a dry, powdered chemical under pressure.
Knowing how to choose and use the right fire extinguisher can make all the difference in an emergency. By familiarizing yourself with extinguisher classes and keeping these essential tips in mind, you’ll be better prepared to act quickly and safely when it matters most. Taking a small step today can lead to a significant difference tomorrow—stay prepared, informed, and responsible.
