A Telehandler Operator for a riprap seawall project is responsible for operating telescopic handler machinery to lift, move, and place large, heavy stones (riprap) and materials to construct or repair shorelines. This role requires high precision, strong spatial awareness, and strict adherence to safety protocols when maneuvering in tight,, uneven, and coastal areas. 

  • Material Placement & Handling: Utilize forks or bucket attachments to move large rocks, stones, and geotextile fabrics to the seawall area.
  • Precision Operation: Place materials accurately for erosion control, working around water, uneven terrain, and potentially in tight spaces.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Conduct daily pre-operational inspections (checking fluids, tires, brakes, and hydraulics) to ensure safety and performance.
  • Load Safety: Adhere strictly to manufacturer load charts and capacity limits, especially when extending the boom over the seawall.
  • Site Support: Support crew members, including riprap workers and site supervisors, by transporting, loading, and unloading materials to the required locations.
  • Safety Compliance: Follow all safety policies to prevent accidents, including managing machine stability on slopes and near water. 

Responsibilities

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Must have PPE and reliable transportation.
  • Experience: Proven experience operating a telehandler, ideally on heavy civil or seawall construction projects.
  • Certifications: Valid telehandler certification and relevant safety training (e.g., OSHA 10-hour or equivalent).
  • Technical Skills: Ability to read load charts and understand the impact of load size/weight on stability.
  • Coordination: Excellent hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to work in challenging weather conditions, including extreme heat or cold, and in coastal, wet, or uneven terrain.
  • Communication: Clear communication with spotters and crew members. 
Working Conditions
  • Environment: Frequently outdoors, requiring endurance of varied weather conditions.
  • Terrain: Uneven, sandy, or wet, requiring cautious maneuvering.
  • Hazards: Working near open water and with heavy, unstable materials. 
Preferred Experience
  • Experience with specific coastal construction techniques or environmental regulations.
  • Ability to operate additional equipment like skid steers or small loaders. 

The hourly rate for this position is $23.00-$30.00/hour. This range is a good-faith estimate based on factors such as relevant skills, experience, education, training, geographic location and other considerations permitted by law.
