Qualifications & Experience

  • A tile setter's primary role is to install designs using tiles that are cut and shaped to fit different areas in buildings. They manage everything from the preparation of the surface to applying grout. Tile setters play an integral role in completing the look and feel of a building, whether it's a residential, commercial, or public space. Below is a list of typical responsibilities for a tile setter:
  • Measuring and marking surfaces
  • Tile setters begin their job by measuring the surface area that needs to be tiled. They use precise marking tools to ensure that tiles will be symmetrically aligned and fit perfectly on the surface.
  • Cutting and shaping tiles
  • Using specialized tools, tile setters cut tiles according to the measurements they've taken. The tile needs to be sized precisely to fit corners, electrical outlets, and plumbing fixtures.
  • Laying tiles
  • After cutting the tiles to shape, the tile setter builds underbeds and installs anchor bolts and brackets before mixing, applying, and spreading the necessary materials and adhesives. They set the tiles in position and apply pressure to affix them to the base. This requires precision and attention to detail.
  • Sealing and cleaning
  • With the tiles securely in position, tile setters pack grout into the joints between tiles to ensure water or other debris doesn't enter the gap. In some applications, they may seal the tiles to protect against water and other damage. The final step is cleaning the finished surface for a polished appearance.
