Protect Your Body: Protecting Your Knees on the Job

Knee injuries are often caused by small amounts of stress repeated over time. Taking a few extra seconds to use proper knee protection and follow safe lifting practices can make a meaningful difference.

Your knees take on a lot of stress during a typical construction workday.

Repeated kneeling, crawling, climbing, lifting and working on hard surfaces can lead to strains, inflammation and other injuries that may affect your ability to work comfortably and safely.

Protecting your knees today can help prevent future health and career-related problems.

Use proper knee protection

When a job requires kneeling, always use high-quality knee pads or a padded kneeling surface. Choose protection that fits properly, stays securely in place and provides enough cushioning for the task being performed.

Whenever possible, avoid kneeling directly on concrete, gravel, metal or other hard surfaces. The right knee protection can help reduce pressure on the joints and minimize the impact of repetitive work.

Change positions throughout the day

Staying in one position for too long can place unnecessary stress on your knees and other joints. Take short breaks when possible, to stand, stretch and move around.

When the job allows, use tools, carts or adjustable work platforms that reduce the need for excessive bending, kneeling or crawling. Changing your position throughout the day can help reduce repetitive strain and keep your body moving safely.

Practice safe lifting techniques

Knee injuries can occur when workers twist, squat improperly or lift heavy materials with poor body positioning. When lifting, keep your back straight, bend at the knees and use your legs to help lift the load. Avoid sudden movements or twisting while carrying materials.

Heavy or awkward loads should not be handled alone. Ask for assistance when needed or use appropriate equipment to help move materials safely.

Maintain strength and flexibility

Strong leg muscles help support the knees and can make everyday movements easier. Stretching before work and maintaining flexibility can also help reduce the risk of strains and overuse injuries.

Pay attention to how your body feels throughout the workday. Persistent pain, swelling or discomfort should not be ignored. Reporting concerns early can help prevent a minor issue from becoming a more serious injury.

Why healthy habits matter

Knee injuries are often caused by small amounts of stress repeated over time. Taking a few extra seconds to use proper knee protection, change your work position and follow safe lifting practices can make a meaningful difference.

When workers take care of their knees, they help protect their ability to work safely, stay productive and maintain a healthy career.
