Job Description
- $22- $28/hour DOE
- Ability to work in industrial and shipboard environments, including tanks, confined spaces, and at heights.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs frequently and perform prolonged physical activity (standing, bending, kneeling, crouching).
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and shipyard procedures.
- Willingness to learn and consistently follow safety, environmental, and PPE procedures.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Generally, 5-10 years of advanced marine preservation experience
- Leads advanced coating operations and inspections; sets up and coordinates preservation activities, equipment, and work areas
- Provides technical guidance and mentorship, supports audits and customer reviews, ensures compliance with NAVSEA, environmental, and quality requirements
- Demonstrates expert knowledge of coating systems, SSPC standards, NAVSEA items, and environmental controls.

Responsibilities
Shift : 0600 to 1445 OR 1500 to 2300
Depending on experience level (J1 – J4), responsibilities may include:
- Perform surface preparations (cleaning, scraping, sanding, power tooling) in accordance with SSPC and NAVSEA requirements
- Apply coatings using brush, roller, and progressively more advanced spray equipment and methods
- Mix and handle paints according to manufacturer, NAVSEA, and job specification requirements, including induction times and material verification
- Mask and protect adjacent surfaces and equipment
- Follow NAVSEAS standards, shipyard procedures, and work specifications for preservation and housekeeping
- Obtain and document environmental readings, WFT and DFT readings as required by level
- Comply with all safety, environmental, PPE, and respiratory protection requirements
- Report equipment issues, coating defects, or safety concerns to supervision
- Support team members, assist with job completion, and, at senior levels, mentor junior painters and coordinate work activities
LEVEL PLACEMENT (Based on Experience & Competency)
- Entry Level (J1)
- No prior experience required; related industrial, construction, manufacturing, or shipyard experience helpful
- Performs basic cleaning and surface preparation, assists with brush and roll coating applications under close supervision
- Learns NAVSEA housekeeping and basic preservation requirements, PPE usage, and shipboard navigation
- Developing Level (J2)
- Generally, 1-3 years of painting/coating or related experience
- Performs routine surface preparation and coating tasks independently using hand and power tools
- Mixes coatings per specifications, measure and documents environmental conditions and WFT/DFT readings, and supports brush, roll, and basic spray operations
- Advanced Level (J3)
- Generally, 3-5 years of marine preservation or equivalent coating experience
- Independently executes complex surface preparation and coating applications, including brush, roll, and spray methods
- Troubleshoots coating and equipment issues, participates in quality checkpoints, and assists with training junior painters
- Applies epoxy, enamel, nonskid, and specialty coatings in accordance with NAVSEA and customer requirements
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and overtime as needed
- Travel up to 30% may be required based on operational needs
- Must comply with all shipyard safety and training requirements
The hourly rate for this position is $22-$28/hour. This range is a good-faith estimate based on factors such as relevant skills, experience, education, training, geographic location and other considerations permitted by law.
