Structural Lead-Welder

Overview

Responsibilities

Leadership Responsibilities

• Coordinate daily work assignments under the direction of the Foreman or Supervisor

• Help plan work sequences to improve efficiency

• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to welders

• Provide day-to-day work direction

• Assist with training new employees and apprentices

• Communicate production progress, issues, and obstacles to the Foreman or Supervisor

• Help maintain crew productivity and support schedule completion

Welding & Technical Responsibilities

• Perform welding duties while serving as the senior working welder

• Verify proper fit-up and welding preparation before work begins

• Ensure welding meets drawings, specifications, and approved welding procedures

• Monitor workmanship and minimize rework

• Identify and resolve production issues before they affect the schedule

• Coordinate required materials, equipment, and welding consumables

• Assist Quality Assurance personnel during inspections

Safety & Quality

• Promote safe work practices

• Ensure compliance with applicable safety procedures

• Maintain high-quality welding standards

• Produce consistent welds requiring minimal rework

• Promote teamwork, professionalism, and a strong safety culture

Communication & Troubleshooting

• Strong communication skills

• Ability to coordinate multiple work assignments

• Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills

• Ability to work effectively with Foremen, Supervisors, QA, and welding crews

• Strong mentoring and coaching abilities

Preferred Qualifications

• Current AWS or NAVSEA certifications

• Navy vessel repair experience

• Commercial vessel repair experience

• OSHA 30 certification

• Previous welding Lead experience

Supervisory Authority

• Provides daily work direction and technical guidance

• Does not have authority to:

  • Hire or terminate employees

  • Discipline employees

  • Conduct formal employee evaluations

Performance Expectations

• Produce quality welds with minimal rework

• Coordinate daily work efficiently

• Maintain crew productivity

• Develop and mentor less-experienced welders

• Promote safety and teamwork

• Help complete projects on schedule while maintaining quality standards
