Job Description

PeopleReady Skilled Trades is now hiring for experienced Structural Welders for Nassco in Norfolk, VA. Must be available to work 2nd shift. Must have shipyard experience. Must be able to pass a background check and drug screen in order to obtain a DBIDs. Competitive pay from $25.00-$30.00 an hour DOE.

Responsibilities

  • Interpreting blueprints and plans:
  • Accurately reading and understanding technical drawings to determine the required weld placements, joint types, and dimensions. 
  • Preparing metal components:
  • Cutting, grinding, and fitting metal pieces to ensure proper alignment before welding. 
  • Welding operations:
  • Performing various welding techniques like arc welding, MIG welding, or TIG welding to join metal components according to the specified welding parameters. 
  • Quality control inspections:
  • Regularly inspecting welds for defects like cracks, porosity, or improper penetration, ensuring compliance with quality standards. 
  • Maintaining equipment:
  • Properly operating and maintaining welding machines, including cleaning and adjusting settings as needed. 
  • Working in confined spaces:
  • Accessing and welding in tight areas within the ship's structure, which may require special safety procedures. 
  • Safety compliance:
  • Adhering to all shipyard safety regulations regarding personal protective equipment, working at heights, and confined space entry


Qualifications & Experience

  • Must have a minimum of 3 years of experience as a structural welder.
  • Proficient in using SMAW, GMAW and FCAW welding process.
  • Must have shipyard experience.
  • Must be able to access all Navy installations and other shipyards.
  • Must be a US Citizen and be able to pass a background check and drug screen in order to obtain a DBIDs.
  • Must be able to enter confined spaces, work at heights and in confining or restricted spaces aboard vessels under construction/repair.
  • Knowledge of welding on different types of base metals (HY-80 & HY-100).
  • Know the different wire and gas combinations.
  • Quality of welds should be acceptable for N.D.T. should be able to weld steel, aluminum, copper nickel, stainless steel.
  • Should be able to read weld gauges.
  • Must know standard item 1689 and the guide lines of 5 S.

The hourly rate for this position is $25.00-$30.00/hour. This range is a good-faith estimate based on factors such as relevant skills, experience, education, training, geographic location and other considerations permitted by law.
