Outside Machinist

Overview

Responsibilities

• Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, written instructions/technical manuals
• Install, repair and maintain ship’s fluid systems which include pumps, compressors, purifiers, heat exchangers, actuators and valves
• Tests equipment to ensure systems meet specifications
• Installs and tests various shop equipment
• Must have the ability to read and comprehend hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams
• Capable of assembling/installing complex mechanical systems, while meeting alignment criteria of systems and equipment
• Proficient in use of precision measurement tools
• Understanding of both Imperial and Metric measuring systems
• Must have shop mathematical skills, with understanding of geometry, trigonometry, and work with decimals and fractions
• Constant safety awareness
• Safely use hand power tools and portable machining tools
• Must comprehend written and verbal instructions (in English).
• Be able to hear warning signals, read and comprehend safety instructions
• Other relevant tasks may be assigned

Qualifications & Experience

• Must have a minimum of 3 years of experience as an outside machinist in the marine shipyard environment.
• Must be a U.S. citizen and qualify for a Common Access Card (CAC) and/or DBIDS badge.
• Must have reliable attendance and punctuality.
• Frequent to continuous lifting of machining tools and equipment, up to 50 lbs., climbing ladders or equipment, balancing, reaching above shoulder or out in front, manual dexterity, pushing, bending, occasionally lowering self into confined spaces, working in reclined positions, as needed. Must have good eye and foot coordination.
• Works in all areas of the shipyard and onboard ships.
• Must be able to maintain general safety awareness and avoid hazards in the work area.
• Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, gases, various climates and temperatures and low ventilation conditions. Exposure to constantly moving machines and mechanical parts and high levels of constant noise.
