Outside Machinist

Overview

Responsibilities

An Outside Machinist's typical duties include:

- Disassembling or dismantling valves or pumps, inspecting for wear and assessing replacement need, then re-assembling

- Installing stanchions and hand rails for gratings and ladders

- Installing piping for steam, exhaust, suction, discharge, heating, and/or refrigeration

- Dismantling, inspecting and repairing deck machinery, main engines, generator governors, and/or turbines

- Running horizontal and vertical lines for alignment of engines

- Overhauling and repairing refrigerating machinery

Qualifications & Experience

• Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience as an outside machinist. Must have shipyard experience. Must be able to climb on and around ships and walk to other yard areas and requires extended periods of standing and walking (75%). Inspections and work may require climbing ladders, working at heights, walking on scaffolding and observing co-workers using tools and equipment. Lifting/carrying tools and parts weighing up to 50 lbs. on frequent basis. Standing, bending, sitting, reaching, pushing, pulling, crouching, kneeling, handling, finger dexterity, feeling, eye/hand/foot coordination, seeing, hearing required. Selecting appropriate tools for jobs, as per trade classification. Works in tight, confined work spaces on board ship and is exposed to varied temperatures, wind, wet and humid conditions, fumes, odors and dust, vibrations from ship and hand tools.
